Summer Tips…

Gel Envy

If you’re in need of some nail polish this summer, might I make a polite suggestion? I found this while I was in NYC a couple months back, but it’s available in drugstores here as well – the Revlon Colorstay Gel Envy in Pocket Aces is the perfect tan-enhancing, bright pop of colour but still appropriate for work shade for your nails. The colour is difficult to describe – it’s coral, it’s pink and it’s red, but it’s none of the above at the same time. I find it extremely unique in my collection and have worn it a LOT in the last couple of months.

In terms of the formula and wear time, this is the first Revlon Colorstay Gel Envy polish I’ve tried, and I’m definitely keen to get more, because they last almost a full 5-6 days on me (which is almost unheard of) and instead of full-on chipping, you get more gradual tip wear, which I prefer and it’s easier to pull off the not-so-perfect polish days.

Have any of you tried this formula of nail polish, and what colour should I get next? What other summer polishes are you loving right now?

The Best Find of All Time..?

I talk about Winners a lot on this blog – and it seems that won’t be changing any time soon. For those of you who aren’t familiar, Winners is a Canadian discount store for brand name stuff, similar to TJ Maxx in the US – I think they’re owned by the same company. Anyway, it’s a lot of hit and miss there, though I do find that their cosmetic and hair department is quite good most of the time, especially the latter.

Recently, I was giving the makeup section a browse, which normally is not really a great section as most things are opened up and quite disgusting. But the high-end stuff they keep in locked plastic boxes that can only be opened by staff – you can get all kinds of discount brands, Lancome, Cle de Peau, etc., usually products I’m not interested in or weird colours. However, as luck would have it, I was just in time for a Marc Jacobs shipment so there were loads of plastic boxes with nail polishes, lip glosses, and other stuff inside. I could barely believe it when I saw that one of them contained a Style Icon No. 7 Plush Eye Shadow Palette inside… and even better, it was in the shade Lolita! I’ve heard tons of good stuff about this palette – practically everyone and their mother has been raving about it since it was released, but I just couldn’t justify the ridiculous price tag, not to mention I didn’t really need it (do you ever?). The Winners price? $49.99. Did I need another neutral eyeshadow palette? Is $50 still a stupid amount of money to blow on seven eyeshadows? Debatable. But still 30% off the retail price of $71 CAD, so I just knew I couldn’t pass it up.

I won’t go over the product all that much as it’s been raved about across the globe – the sleek packaging and the lovely colours. I’ve only tried it once or twice, and it is insanely pigmented – you barely need to dip your brush into the pan to get enough shadow for your entire eyelid. Beautiful for everyday wear and for glamming it up at night.  This is definitely one purchase I won’t be regretting.

The moral of the story? Go to Winners more often!

Have you tried this palette or any of the other Marc Jacobs shadows? What did you think?

The Summer Switchup

Summer
It might seem a bit late for this post, but summer has been sloooow in coming to this part of the world. Today is finally sunny and quite warm, so I think summer is officially here! Despite this, the weather has definitely been a bit warmer recently and I’ve had to switch up / add some products into my lineup to really make it feel like summer. For skincare, I never use anything too rich to begin with, but summer is really when I can back off the moisture since it is so humid here. My personal faves are The Body Shop Vitamin E Aqua Boost Sorbet, which is hydrating without feeling sticky or gross, and Philosophy’s Total Matteness Mattifying Pore Eraser, which I actually like to dab on right before I apply any makeup. This works decently at keeping shine/sweat at bay (ew!). Of course the sun is out and to shield myself from that, I recently picked up the Vichy Ideal Soleil Invisible Mist SPF 50, which is a spray-on sunscreen that I can use on my face.

For makeup, I like introducing more colours into my routine, without being obnoxious or office-inappropriate, so when I’m feeling like I have a lot of time, I bust out my Make Up For Ever Aqua Eyes Aqua Creamliner in shade 5, which is a lovely purple waterproof gel liner that I can get away with at work. My other favourite that I’ve worn down to a tiny little nub is my Revlon Lip Butter in Papaya – literally what’s left of it is what is poking out of the tube in the picture. It’s a sheer coral that brightens the entire face and is perfect for summer. I’m going to have to get another one soon!

At night, I like something lighter but still moisturizing on the lips, which is why I opt for the Korres Lip Butter in Jasmine, which smells delicious and leaves my lips nice and hydrated without any extra tackiness.

What are your summer favourites for both skincare and makeup?

A Clarins Moment

Clarins
On any given day, I only need the flimsiest of excuses to open my wallet to purchase more beauty products, whether I need them or not. It takes a stunning amount of self-control to keep this impulse in check. This is why it should be no surprise whatsoever that I found myself browsing my local Clarins counter at The Bay. For all you Canadians out there, you’ll know that wherever else Clarins is sold, the makeup line isn’t carried – Shoppers Drug Mart and Sephora only carry the skincare range.

I’ve tried a few Clarins products over the year, mostly their cult favourites including this toner, this beauty balm, and this makeup remover, with mixed results. I’ve been hearing tons about their lip products so I thought it was about time to hit up one of their counters to see if I could pick me up some lip lovin’. Luckily for me, they were having a free gift with purchase deal that day, which required the purchase of two items including one skincare product, so I decided to go ahead and pick up the Clarins One-Step Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser, which the saleslady recommended for my skin. I’m almost out of my current morning cleansers, so I thought, why not have another option? And for the lips, I finally got my paws on one of the Instant Light Natural Lip Perfector (shade 03 – nude shimmer), and I couldn’t help but pick up the newer Instant Light Lip Balm Perfector in shade 04 – orange, which is the only one of the three products I have tried so far. It is lovely for summer, intimidatingly orange in the tube, but it goes on sheer, so it gives a perfect coral tint to your pout.

The gift with purchase came with four travel-sized, but very generous samples, including a mini of the exfoliating cleanser, Foot Beauty Treatment Cream, HydraQuench Cream-Mask (looks amazing for winter!) and Instant Smooth Perfecting Touch primer, which I am extremely excited to try.

All in all, not a bad haul for a lunchtime shop…

Have you tried any of these products, and what is your favourite Clarins product? What do you recommend I try next?
